Mark is a friendly 35 year old man with developmental disabilities who is diagnosed with mental illness and mild hearing loss. Mark embarked on a new challenge in October 2002, when his mother was put into a nursing home. He had no one to help him with his Medications and other needs until an emergency waiver could be processed.

He had never gone to a birthday party, or to the movies. He stated that his mother always worried about him getting sick or stung by a bee, so she kept him home a lot of the time. That was all about to change. Recent changes in his funding have allowed mark to live in his own house with a roommate. Supported Living Staff are scheduled to work at the house each day to teach and assist him with daily living skills. Now he goes to the movies, shops for groceries, visits the library, attends church, goes out to eat, and has been to several birthday parties.

He is happier than he ever has been. Mark is getting ready for his own birthday party in a couple of weeks and is having his party at Chi Chi’s, his favorite restaurant. Together with his staff, Mark is working everyday to become more independent in many aspects of his life. The funding and services that he receives allows him to work towards his goals and dreams, as well as becoming an active member of the community.
